Organic Milk Prices and Finding the Right Dairy Products

I wish organic milk prices weren’t so high. With three kids, we should just have Bossy the Cow in the back yard, with a direct line from the cow to the milk jugs in our refrigerator. After all, my kids are always asking for a pet.

The Best Milk to Buy if You Can't Afford Organic Milk

But since I buy my milk at the local grocery store, I compromise and buy milk with no rBST (Recombinant bovine somatotropin), which is a hormone given to the cows to make them produce more milk.

As with many things in food production, debate exists as to whether or not rBST is harmful or helpful. I am voting with my pocketbook and buy rBST free milk which is now easy to find at my local national chain supermarket. I wish organic milk prices were lower. But as with many things, I do the best I can.

What are the Best Dairy Product Choices?

1. Low fat/fat free milk. On a daily basis, drink low fat or fat free milk.

2. Low fat/fat free PLAIN yogurt. Try the thick Greek plain yogurt named Fage which can be purchased in low fat and fat free varieties. I find the Fage brand to be expensive, but Trader Joe’s has its own brand of Greek style yogurt that is delicious. Other yogurt makers are hopping on the "Greek Style" bandwagon, so check your local supermarket. Yogurt is great with honey, nuts, or fruit-only jam. Again, look for yogurt that at least rBST free. Organic milk prices are falling, so some organic yogurts may be an economical choice.

Why start with plain yogurt? Because the individual six or eight ounce containers are expensive. And because many pre-flavor yogurts have loads of sugar. And in the case of Yoplait, high fructose corn syrup.

Instead, put frozen or fresh fruit, and a few walnuts into your yogurt for a great snack.

3. Cheese. If you are watching your cholesterol, try low fat cheese such as part skim mozzarella.

We eat regular cheese because we don’t like the taste of low fat cheese. It reminds me of some of the rubber foods my kids have in their play kitchen. Maybe I played too many games of taco stand with my three year old, but I prefer food with more texture than I find in low fat cheese.

I eat whole cheese in moderate amounts, which a serving is about the size of my thumb. I personally love feta and blue cheese. They have a strong flavor, so a little bit can really make a flavorful difference in a salad, on top of chicken, or even as a snack with a few whole wheat crackers.

4. Cottage Cheese. Low fat and fat free. To save on sugar and enhance the taste, add your own fruit instead of buying it with fruit already added to the container.
