Mezzetta Make That Sandwich Contest
We entered the Mezzetta Make That Sandwich Contest! Yes, we do want our chance to win $25,000 for making a sandwich. Now if I could only get a prize for other things, like waxing the car, or trimming the hedges. Nice thought.
But back to sandwiches….
A recent study at Texas A & M University found that the average American eats about 200 sandwiches a year. Evidently in this household, we are very average. We take our lunches to school and to work, and we eat lots of sandwiches.
My winning sandwich had to be fast, easy, and healthy. To me, that meant no mayonnaise or slabs of white bread.
I went to the Mezzetta website to see some of the amazing past winners of the Make Your Own Sandwich contest. Some of the past winners had a prep time of 30 minutes.
Wow, 30 minutes to make a sandwich. OK, so with my poor cooking skills, it really could take me 30 minutes to make a sandwich. The problem is it would still be something akin to a peanut butter and jelly.
In my household, prep time is 10 minutes or less. Even better, a great sandwich has to be something the kids could make for themselves.
Fortunately, as a thank you for spreading the word on this contest, Mezzetta provided me with products to test and use in my sandwich making efforts. I read the labels and was very pleased with the quality of the ingredients.
After conducting a taste test of all the products, we realized we loved:
• Mezzetta Pitted Calamata Olives and Italian Castrelvetrano Whole Green Olives
• Mezzetta Deli Sliced Roasted Sweet Bell Pepper Strips
• Mezzetta Roasted Yellow and Red Sweet Peppers
My oldest daughter Hazel and I thought the Mezzetta Deli Sliced Tamed Jalapenos were terrific and I agree with her.
Mezzetta Make That Sandwich Contest For the Whole Family?
We have whole wheat bread in our house so Lulu went for a sandwich she could make for her lunchbox. The Happy Healthy Sandwich.
Any food involving Lulu has a garnish or decoration. Her sandwich has lean roast beef on wheat bread, and it smiles back at her. Perfect.

Hazel immediately went to our version of bread: a tortilla. She used ham and cheese, but the way she layered on the ingredients, it was very messy to eat.
But she gave me an idea. Why not combine the ingredients in my chopper and make a spread?
I took several ingredients including Mezzetta Pitted Calamata Olives, Mezzetta Deli Sliced Roasted Sweet Bell Pepper Strips, Sun Ripened Dried Tomatoes in Olive Oil and gave them a whirl. On a corn tortilla went the Mezzetta spread, some ham and cheese. Into the toaster oven and out came a warm tortilla sandwich, Hazel style. Done in less than 10 minutes.
But what about a back to school sandwich? My kids are starting to make their own lunches. As long as it has a protein, fruit and vegetable, I give them leeway to make their own choices that I know they will eat.
I went to the refrigerator for what we had on hand: tortillas, turkey, shredded carrots. Easy, healthy kid food. Time for the Back to School Wrap! It’s a winner in our household.
We will be entering this sandwich in the contest, and will post the recipe in September.
We found our favorite Mezzetta sandwich.
