Healthy Olive Oil Instead
of That Tub of Crisco?

What would win in the battle of healthy olive oil versus my giant tub of Crisco? As a child, we saved money by using Crisco oil for cooking and the tub for baking. It was cheaper than butter, and the more expensive olive oil was reserved for salad dressing.

I remember the Crisco advertisements on TV telling us that Crisco made our crusts flakier. When I tried to use that argument with my husband, he reminded me that I was flaky enough to beat any pie crust. Out went the tub of Crisco.

What to Use Instead Of Crisco

healthy-olive-oil, Photo courtesy PhotoXpress.com When I said goodbye to Crisco, I looked at several substitutes. Even though the Crisco formula has changed in the past 2 years, I knew there were better choices. After some trial and error, lots of error, I replaced the Crisco with olive oil.

1. Olive oil works great for cooking and salad dressing and is considered a heart healthy oil.

But if you ever tried my mother’s blueberry muffin recipe baked with olive oil you would rethink that soggy strategy.

How do you bake without the Crisco shortening or oil?

2. Applesauce. Replace the oil in your baking with the equivalent amount of apple sauce. It makes the cake a bit stickier to remove from the pan, but it is still delicious.

3. Canola oil. If you have to use oil for baking, canola oil is a good choice.

4. Butter. I personally use real butter in my occasional baking because I like using “regular” foods and I am comfortable that my family is eating healthy foods most of the time.
