Candy Bars Are Not Part of
This Healthy Breakfast?

When I first met my husband, he seldom ate any breakfast, much less a healthy breakfast. He preferred to eat a large lunch and an even larger dinner. He would grab a candy bar and Diet Coke for breakfast as he raced out the door to work. He complained about feeling tired, but attributed it to his busy work schedule.

When we had our first child, my husband continued to say he was not hungry at breakfast and he would eat later. In the sleep deprived state of early motherhood, I accidentally spread strained peas instead of butter on my morning toast.

How could that compete with his breakfast Snickers?

He finally agreed to eat something in the morning that, for safety’s sake, he would prepare himself.

People who eat breakfast are more likely to maintain a healthy weight.

Eating breakfast revs up your metabolism for the day, improving your ability to burn calories. Breakfast helps keep your blood sugar stable during the morning so you aren't craving a sugary mid-morning snack. When you eat breakfast, you are less likely to overeat at your next meal and throughout the day.

My husband decided to view his body as his favorite car. Without premium fuel, he was destined to run out of gas. To perform at an optimum level, he had to be properly nourished.

banana on wheels, healthy breakfast He now applies this metaphor to our three children, whom he sometimes refers to as go-carts.

What is a Healthy Breakfast?

A healthy breakfast has protein and fiber.

Protein is found in dairy products, nuts, lean meats, or eggs.

Fiber is found in fruits, vegetables, or whole grains. Sorry, but donuts or plain white bagels do not count.

So what should you eat?

I admittedly love cereal and milk. Open box, pour cereal, pour milk, and eat with a spoon. Now that’s my kind of cooking effort. But make sure you are making a good cereal choice.

My husband prefers:

• peanut butter on toast
• a bag of cereal mixed with a yogurt
• a chicken, cheese, and salsa quesadilla
• any type of sandwich with lean meat such as turkey and cheese
