Quick Ways to Add Ground Flax Seed to Your Healthy Diet Plan
I incorporated ground flax seed, also referred to as flax meal, into our family’s healthy diet. It took me three years to get past the idea that I was actually eating a "health food". I admit that healthy eating isn't always easy for me.
I learned that flax seeds contain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which can lower cholesterol, and contribute to a healthier heart. It also contains fiber, which I’m sad to say that I actually have to pay attention to as I get older.
I prefer the ground up flax meal because it disappears easily into my baking and anything disappearing into my cooking is definitely beneficial.
I like the Bob's Red Mill Ground Flax Seed Meal, which I can find at my local Trader Joe's and at my local chain grocery store. It's simple to use and stores neatly in my refrigerator. It is easier to get the nutritional benefits from the flax seed when it is ground instead of whole.
You only need two tablespoons a day. My personal favorite way to eat flax is mixed with peanut butter on wheat toast.
Ways to Incorporate Ground Flax Meal Into Your Healthy Diet
Sprinkling over cereal
Mixing with peanut butter
Putting into pancake and waffle batter
Baking into biscuits and scones
Stirring into oatmeal
Blending into fruit smoothies
Storage
Store your flax in the refrigerator in a sealed bag or container. Fresh flax should have a mild, slightly nutty taste.
Don’t use it if it smells like oil paint. And yes, it really does smell like oil paint when it goes bad.
Althought I usually finish a bag before it is rancid, I don't keep my flax longer than 30 days in my refrigerator.
