Foods with high fructose corn syrup were eliminated from our healthy diet. But even some supposed "healthy foods" use high fructose corn syrup as their sweetener.
What is High Fructose Corn Syrup?
How does it work? Artificial sweeteners make you hungrier, so you keep eating more as your body searches for better nutrition and a more stable blood sugar level. What I realized is that foods with high fructose corn syrup just made me fat.
Everyday Foods with High Fructose Corn Syrup
1. Bread. Read the label, even if the bread says it is whole grain and fiber rich. 2. Cereal, even "healthy" fiber-filled varieties. Click here for a list of low sugar/HFCS-free cereals 3. Condiments such as ketchup and pickle relish 4. Fruit flavored yogurt 5. Bottled salad dressing 6. Fruit juices such as cranberry Click here for a brand-specific list of supposed "healthy foods" that contain high fructose corn syrup and maybe even mercury! Trouble in the Freezer Isle at the Grocery StoreRecently, I was at the local supermarket looking for a box of popsicles. I reached for the popsicles labeled “fruit” thinking that I had avoided the ones that are pure sugar. I read the label, which some days is the only reading time I get, and noticed that the popsicles contained high fructose corn syrup.I threw the box back into the standing freezer cabinet. The popsicle box ricocheted across the other boxes, knocking all the popsicle boxes over and out of the freezer case. The original box landed at my feet. Who knew the sweetener laden popsicles could also double as a boomerang? It was like a puppy wanting to come home with me.
After I apologized to the store manager, who was staring at me as if I had taught all the popsicles to jump out of the freezer, I explained that I did not want any of the popsicles because they had an unhealthy sugar substitute. This made sense to me, but apparently not to a lot of other people, including the store manager. I have now been banned from the frozen foods isle of my local supermarket.
After I was forbidden from being within ten feet of the freezer case at the grocery store, my husband bought popsicle molds at the local housewares store. Probably out of sympathy for our kids. I now (gasp) make my own popsicles using frozen fruit with no added sugar and a little bit of milk.
