Food and Nourishment Go Together, or why my six year old can't have Sprite for breakfast.

I learned food and nourishment go together.

We tell our kids over and over, “I love you so much that I am giving you this food to make you strong and smart.” When they ask why they cannot have a can of Sprite for breakfast, we repeat “I love you so much that I am giving you this food to make you strong and smart.”

There are days when my husband and I appear to have a very limited vocabulary.

I believe that food is for nourishing my body so I have energy to keep up with my busy lifestyle. Food is not medication and it will not fix whatever ails my aching soul. I often remind myself that food is only going to make me strong and healthy.

Food will not make me feel emotionally stronger. It won’t fix my dented car bumper, or reverse the effects of my salon stylist coloring my hair a slightly brash shade of orange.

If what I am eating doesn’t meet the healthy and nourishing criteria, I simply don’t need it to survive.

I do think that food should be enjoyed and I love being part of any large, noisy family celebration. I made the choice to eat a reasonable portion at parties so I can run around with the kids after the meal, ensuring that the celebration continues to be loud and fun.
