Creating a Regular Exercise Schedule That Works For You

Follow healthydietmom on Twitter

For my exercise schedule, I began working out in the morning, what some consider the early morning. There are no hair, makeup, or outfit requirements at 5:30 a.m. I enjoy the solitude and quiet of the dawn. I feel more excited about the promise of the new day. Who am I kidding? At 5:30 a.m. I am too sleepy to realize I am exercising.

Whatever time you choose to exercise, protect as if your life depends on it, because it does.

I realized I needed to set aside dedicated time to exercise. What I didn’t realize was that my husband would happily give me that hour to myself, as long as I finished exercising in the wee hours of the morning before our children woke up.

I need to work on my negotiation skills

I learned to not schedule early morning appointments that interfere with my exercise time. My husband also follows this philosophy and does not succumb to the offer for drinks with his coworkers on the nights he exercises.

Find Three One Hour Time Slots

It’s easy to pick an exercise time that contains too many schedule conflicts. I found three times a week that work for me, and I stick to them like super glue in my daughter’s hair.

Why three one hour exercise times?

Because that what you really need to do to take care of your body. If you can do more, great. If not, then

• Make sure at 20 minutes of each exercise time is vigorous, meaning your heart rate is up and your breathing is hard and you can only speak in short phrases.

• If at all possible, it is best to incorporate strength training into your workout. This could be weights, exercise bands, or even pushups.

Originally I made time to exercise so I could have an hour to myself. But then I realized that the exercise meant I could keep up more with my busy life.
